Praise for Malone’s work (a selection).
As strong a collection as you are likely to read all year, Patrick McCabe (Breakfast on Pluto).
It is a true pleasure to read such an accomplished collection. The Irish Times.
But the one that sticks in the mind is Martin Malone’s elegiac account of taking his ailing Dad, a former jockey, to see Jack Yeats’s Before the Start (1915), Claire Wrathall, Arts Quarterly UK.
Malone conveys wonderfully the nuances of rural life in Ireland during this period and is particularly sensitive to the powerlessness of women, June Edwards, The Sunday Tribune.
Books Ireland, Paula O’Hare, ‘…if you have not already come across Martin Malone, catch up now…’
Eilish O’Hanlon, The Irish Independent ‘…there will be few better books published this year.’
Declan Meade, The Siege of Jadotville, ‘A book worth reading, now more than ever.’
